전작인 'The Royal Scam'의 분위기는 사라진 대신 월터 베커와 도널드 페이건은 소울 음악과 팝 음악, 록 음악, 세련된 재즈를 퓨전해 감미로운 걸작 재즈 록 명반을 만들었다. 40명 가까이 되는 음악가들이 참여해 녹음한 이 앨범은 이전 앨범보다 더 길고 정교한 작곡을 추구하면서 많은 세션 연주자들을 다양한 조합으로 실험했으며, 전 곡이 뛰어난 완성도를 자랑한다. 수록되어 있는 것은 7곡이지만, 드러머는 6명이나 사용하고 있다.
스틸리 댄은 그동안 완벽주의적 성향을 보이며 완성도 높은 스튜디오 앨범을 만들려고 많은 실험을 했는데, 그 기법을 끝까지 파고들어 이 앨범으로 자신들의 이상적인 음악을 만들어내는 데 성공했다. 이들의 완벽주의적 레코딩 성향이 빛을 발한 작품으로 하나하나 소리에 의식을 기울일 필요가 있다.

앨범의 제목은 도널드 페이건의 고등학교 친구 중 한 명의 동생과 결혼한 한국인 여성의 이름 '애자'를 따서 지었다고 페이건이 인터뷰에서 말했다. 다만, 철자에 대해 확신하지 못한다고 말하기도 했다. 발음은 '에이자(Asia)'라고 발음한다. 페이건은 애자라는 이름에 대해 "우리는 그 이름이 좋은 이름, 매우 로맨틱한 이미지라고 생각했다. 아름다운 여성과의 조용한 관계에서 나올 수 있는 일종의 평온함"이라고 말했다. 앨범 아트에 등장하는 여성은 야마구치 사요코라는 일본 패션 모델이다.[2] 앨범 커버는 사진가 후지이 히데키가 촬영했다.

스틸리 댄을 대표하는 앨범이자 보통 이들의 최고 걸작으로 꼽힌다.[5] 또한 재즈 록 최고의 명반 중 하나로 꼽히는 앨범이다. 재즈 역사가 테드 지오이아(Ted Gioia)가 이 앨범을 극찬하기도 했다.
발매 이후 시간이 많이 지난 지금까지도 '재즈 록을 대표하는 명반 중 하나', '프로듀싱이 가장 뛰어난 앨범 중 하나'로 대접받고 있다. 2010년 미국 의회도서관에 '국립 음성 기록물'로 지정되어, 의회도서관에서 영구 보관중인 앨범이다. 또 2020년판 롤링 스톤 선정 500대 명반에서 2012년판보다 순위가 대폭 상승한 63위에 선정됐다. 2020년판은 흑인 음악이 재평가되고 클래식 록 앨범들의 순위가 대폭 하락했는데, 이 앨범은 순위가 상승했다. 여러모로 시간이 지날수록 평가가 올라가고 있는 앨범이다.
사실 이 앨범은 발매 초기에는 지금과 같은 일방적 찬사를 받지 못했다. 당시 평론에서는 '음악이 과하게 세련되었다'거나 '스틸리 댄이 이전 앨범에서 보였던 감각이 무뎌졌다'는 식의 내용을 찾을 수 있다. 당대의 평가는 방향성에 있어 찬반이 있겠지만 내용 자체는 음악적 맥락의 이해가 있다. Aja는 스틸리 댄의 앨범 중 가장 대중적인 성향이 강했고 밴드에게 있어 공전의 히트를 안겨주었다.
