1979년 발매된 핑크 플로이드의 음반 The Wall에 수록된 곡이자, The Wall의 타이틀곡. '벽'이라는 주제를 통해 세상의 부조리함을 표현한 곡이다.디스코풍의 같은 곡조[1]로 전개되는 세 파트로 나누어져 있고, 보통 각 파트당 하나의 곡으로 취급한다. 가장 유명한 것은 두 번째 파트로, 영국, 미국 등 각종 차트에서 1위를 휩쓸었고, 미국에서 플래티넘 판매고를 올리는 등 크게 히트하였다.[2]

핑크가 벽을 쌓게 되는 첫 번째 원인을 얘기해 주고 있다. 영화 "The Wall"을 보면 전사한 아버지의 부재가 가지고 오는 핑크의 심리적인 외로움을 잘 나타내고 있다.
"가족 앨범 속의 사진 외에 아버지께서 제게 남겨주신 게 뭐가 있나요? 고작 이 벽 속의 벽돌 하나 뿐 아닙니까."이라는 의미심장한 가사가 일품이다.

영국의 획일화된 교육을 날카롭게 비판하는 곡으로, 'We don't need no education, we don't need no thought control'로 시작되는 버스는 핑크 플로이드가 누군지 잘 모르는 사람들도 70-80년대를 살았다면 많이 들어 봤을 것이다. 진보주의적인 로저 워터스의 사상이 가장 잘 드러난 곡. 하지만, 핑크 플로이드의 팬들은 이 곡보다 Wish You Were Here, Comfortably Numb, Echoes, Shine on You Crazy Diamond 같은 다른 곡들을 선호하는 편이다. 어찌 되었든 이 곡은 프로그레시브 록의 대중적인 인지도를 크게 확보하였고, 러시를 비롯한 다른 많은 80-90년대의 프로그레시브 밴드들에게도 영향을 준 명곡으로 평가된다.
하지만 로저 워터스를 제외한 나머지 멤버들은 이 노래를 별로 좋아하지 않는데 기존 핑크 플로이드의 음악 스타일에 크게 탈피하는 디스코풍 음악에다가 로저 워터스가 혼자서 다 만든 노래이기 때문이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 핑크 플로이드의 대표 명곡 중 하나라서 라이브를 하긴 한다.
이 곡은 1982년 스테파노 풀가(Stefano Pulga, Pink Project 명의로 알려져 있다)라는 이탈리아 가수가 앨런 파슨스 프로젝트의 'Mammagamma'와 짬뽕하여 'Disco Project'란 이름의 이탈로 디스코 곡으로 리믹스하기도 했다. 한국에서 일반 대중들에게는 핑크 플로이드의 원곡보다 이 버전이 더 유명한 편이며, 1980년대 TV 광고 음악으로도 곧잘 쓰였다. 듣기

결국 핑크는 아내의 불륜을 마지막 벽돌로 하여, 자신과 사회를 단절시키는 벽을 완성시킨다. '난 아무것도 필요 없어'라는 가사는 핑크의 잔인한 세상에 대한 환멸을 잘 드러낸다.
