성공적인 이미지 변신

브리트니 스피어스가 발매한 정규 3집 Britney의 리드 싱글이다.

브리트니의 커리어에 큰 변환점을 가져다 준 싱글로, 이전까지 해왔던 틴팝 장르에서 벗어나 끈적한 알앤비 장르의 노래로 완전히 다른 양상을 보인다. 전작의 리드 싱글들이었던 ...Baby One More Time과 Oops!... I Did It Again이 거대한 성공을 거두었기에 'I'm a Slave 4 U' 역시 많은 주목을 받았다. 브리트니는 이렇게 이목이 집중되던 도중인 2001년 9월 6일 MTV VMA에서 이 노래로 컴백 무대를 가졌는데, 해당 무대가 엄청난 파급력을 낳았다. 틴팝스타였던 브리트니가 실제 뱀을 몸에 휘감고 "난 너의 노예야!"라고 외쳤으니... 해당 무대는 브리트니 스피어스 커리어는 물론 MTV VMA 역사 전체에서도 기억해야할 공연으로 손꼽힌다.

물론 이 무대의 파급력이 마냥 긍정적인 것만은 아니었다. 브리트니의 이미지 변신에 대한 거부감도 많았고, 실제로 해당 무대 뒤 MTV VMA에는 학부모 단체의 항의 전화가 빗발쳤다고 한다. 살아있는 뱀과 백호를 무대에 올리는 바람에 동물 보호 단체에서도 반발했다고. 이런 이유로 큰 화제성에도 불구하고 빌보드 핫 100에서는 27위에 그치는 등 이전 싱글들에 비해 부진한 성적을 보였다. 미국 외에 다른 국가에서는 대부분 10위권에 진입하며 인기에 걸맞는 성적을 거두었다.

그러나 어쨌든 I'm a Slave 4 U 브리트니의 커리어 상 가장 중요한 싱글로 손꼽힌다. 이 노래로 이미지 변신에 완벽히 성공한 그녀는 섹시 스타로서의 행보를 이어나갈 수 있었다.

세계 주요 국가 차트에서 10위권 이내로 진입한 것이 비해 미국 빌보드 핫 100에서는 27위라는 부진한 순위를 기록했다. 당시 브리트니의 인기, 파급력을 생각하면 어처구니 없을 정도로 낮은 순위지만, 여기에는 라디오 방송국의 보이콧이 많은 영향을 끼쳤다. 2000년대 초반 빌보드 싱글 차트는 에어플레이(라디오) 점수가 순위를 좌지우지할 정도로 큰 비중을 차지했는데, 라디오에서 브리트니 노래에 보이콧을 선언하면서 저조한 순위를 기록할 수 밖에 없었다. 보이콧을 행한 이유가 명확히 밝혀지진 않았지만, 브리트니의 다음 투어 홍보 채널을 바꿧기 때문에 보이콧이 일어났다는 주장이 많다.
